Flowering Plants
If some color is what you're after, you will want to add some flowering plants to your landscape. Las Vegas has a short bloom season, there are a handful of plants that will offer color throughout summer. One of my favorites that thrives in the extreme heat and is also drought tolerant is lantana. It comes in many colors from white to purple and brilliant reds and oranges. In the winter trim it back and it stays dormant until spring. Lantana is a perennial and mine have lasted for over 5 years. They keep coming back bigger and better year after year! When choosing flowering plants it is important to understand the difference between annuals and perennials.
Perennials
Perennials are plants that live for more than two years. Most grow and bloom over the spring and summer, die back by winter and then return in the spring.
Annuals
Annuals are plants that complete germination to production of seed within one year and then die. Some annuals have a life cycle that can occur in as little as one month. So be prepared to replace annuals yearly or sooner.
